So what’s with the title of my blog? “Itaga sa bato” is a Tagalog idiom that translates literally as “cast in stone”. It means to remember something forever.
You could take that to mean a couple of things. A blog is essentially a journal. It’s a way to remember in words what you were thinking and feeling at a particular moment in time. You can also remember things visually. Photography, for me, allows me to create a permanent image of how I see the world; I’m casting that image not into stone, but into computer pixels and paper & ink. You can argue that a digital image is never permanent, that is true; but my photos take my mental and visual perceptions and make them permanent. Besides, I suck at digital post-processing!
The title also refers to my Filipino heritage. I don’t speak Tagalog (although I do understand it), and I regret that. I am also a bit sad that I don’t even have a basic understanding of my parents’ dialects: Bicolano and Waray-Waray. When I was in the Philippines in November 2005 and again in May 2010, I realised just how separated I’ve become from my heritage. I need to remember what I can, and create new connections to the Philippines and to the family and culture I have there.
The title is also a tribute to my grandmother, Lola Monica, who passed away May 18, 2010. I will remember her forever.
