Be present

I had my first “test” today on following through with my intention. It was something so simple, but deceptively difficult.

I had an almost 3 hour drive out west today. I left home at 3:30 so most of the drive was into the sunset. I wish I had the words to describe how beautiful it was. With so few cars on the highway, I attempted to take a few photos, but they don’t do it justice. I told myself to enjoy the moment, and I marvelled at the changes in the sky as sunset switched to dusk.

But…it was hard to stay present. My mind kept thinking about what would I have for dinner and did I remember to lock the front door and how much further was the drive. Those of you who have driven on prairie highways know how easy it is to let your mind wander. It took more conscious effort than I would have guessed to keep focused on the sunset. It was hard to make myself stop thinking of other things. And that may have lessened the enjoyment of that sunset a little.

Well, there’s a reason I picked this intention. I obviously need to work on it. Today taught me that I’ve chosen something worth the effort, and that it’s going to be an interesting year because of it.
